More information about Safe Places

The Safe Places scheme encourages people with a learning disability and Autism to be independent, and provides reassurance to their family and carers. As Richard Gittins, who helps manages the scheme, says:

“This scheme helps people with a learning disability to go out and about on their own. It also helps parents of someone with a learning disability to give them the confidence that their family member will be safe.”

Safe Places are businesses and services, which helps persons with a learning disability or Autism. The Safe Place calms the person and, if required, calls their contact person. This contact person is found written on their Safe Place card, that we encourage the person to carry.

The police are called if the person is in danger or they have reported bullying or harassment. For concerns about the person's welfare, we encourage the Safe Place to contact the Council’s Safeguarding Team.

A registered Safe Place has a Safe Place sticker in their front window. Devon and Cornwall Police and Cornwall People First support the scheme.

We check Safe Places, and offer training and support.
