Meningitis Awareness for Childcare Providers
Wednesday 12th June 2019
Although meningitis can affect anyone of any age, babies and young children are most at risk. Despite vaccines being available to protect against some types, there are still thousands of cases each year in the UK.
The Meningitis Aware Recognition Mark (MARM) toolkit has been developed to help those providing childcare to the under-5s ensure that staff, parents and carers know about meningitis.
On completion of a checklist, each provider will be awarded the MARM which demonstrates that they are:
- Providing information and training to staff about the signs and symptoms of meningitis and the action to take if a child is ill
- Aware of the importance of vaccination for the prevention of meningitis
- Planning ahead by having a protocol in place for the action to take if a child is ill
- Planning ahead by having a plan in place to deal with a case or an outbreak of meningitis
Feedback from a setting in Cornwall:
“The website is great and provides staff with good training on recognising the signs and symptoms etc. We were able to update posters and order more cards for parents and carers. They need to know you have a policy in place to deal with sickness, illness, hospital trips etc. which all settings will have anyway. They ask about thinking of them when fund raising if you are able but there are no cost implications. It is worth doing”
