Healthy Pregnancy

Stopping Smoking:

Protecting your baby from tobacco smoke is one of the best things you can do to give your baby a healthy start in life.

Every cigarette you smoke contains 4,000 harmful chemicals including carbon monoxide which limits the oxygen to your baby, increasing your baby’s heart beat. Each cigarette you smoke affects your baby, so cutting down is not an option.

Stopping smoking in pregnancy can reduce the risks of:

  •          Stillbirth and miscarriage
  •          Complications in pregnancy and birth
  •          Your baby being born too early
  •          Cot death
  •          Asthma later in life

Smoking is far more damaging to your baby's health, and your health, than any STRESS that comes from quitting. E-cigarettes aren't risk free, but they are less harmful than smoking. Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is the safest product to use in pregnancy. With support from a healthy pregnancy advisor and NRT you are 4 times more likely to quit smoking.

Weight management, healthy eating and physical activity:

A healthy lifestyle is important during pregnancy. Eating healthily will help your baby to develop and grow. Keeping active can help you cope with the demands on your body during pregnancy and labour.

Our healthy pregnancy advisors will send you a free information pack followed by a phone call to discuss:

  •          Healthy eating and exercising safely
  •          Supplements and foods to avoid during pregnancy
  •          Useful resources including recipe books and swimming vouchers
  •          Information on local antenatal activities and our healthy pregnancy sessions

Eating healthily and keeping physically active throughout your pregnancy can help to reduce your chances  of excessive weight gain in your pregnancy. This may help to reduce your risks of getting high blood pressure, diabetes or needing a caesarean section.
