Making Every Contact Count

Making every contact count (MECC) is an approach to improving health and reducing health inequalities developed by the NHS and local government. It is a way of encouraging and helping people to make healthier choices and to achieve positive long-term behaviour change.

The aim of this training is to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding to “Make Every Contact Count” in their day to day work, offering practical support to individuals in their efforts to attain a healthier lifestyle.

Students will learn how effective communication can support behaviour change, how to promote key health messages and use brief intervention and motivational interviewing techniques to move through the cycle of change.

Summary of Learning Outcomes:

  1. Recognise how effective communication supports the delivery of health messages.

  2. Understand the cycle of behaviour change model

  3. Identify key health messages and the importance of healthy lifestyle choices

  4. Know how to deliver brief advice and brief interventions.

  5. Understand basic motivational interviewing techniques

Making Every Contact Count Plus (Health Inequalities)

This follow on course from Making Every Contact Count explores the wider determinants of health inequalities with a focus on money, housing and mental health.

By the end of the course participants will be able to-

  •         Describe how inequality leads to poorer health outcomes
  •         Outline key areas of inequality
  •         Demonstrate an understanding of key issues and the impact on health and well-being
  •         Identity support available

Making Every Contact Count (MECC) - Train the Trainer

Our 3 day MECC Train the Trainer programme enables people to deliver MECC training in-house for their organisation and to contribute to delivery in the wider community as appropriate.

 Training takes place at Healthy Cornwall Offices in Bassett Road, Camborne with the next course running in February 2019 as below.

  • Monday 11th February – Making Every Contact Count (MECC) as a participant
  • Monday 18th February – MECC Training for Trainers


There is no cost to attend the course but we do have the following eligibility criteria for participants.

  • MECC should have some relevance to their current role.
  • Experience in delivering training
  • Confident in group facilitation.
  • Have organisational support to deliver MECC
  • Are able to contribute to the implementation of MECC in their organisation (minimum three sessions)
