During the covid 19 pandemic, Healthy Cornwall are not able to offer physical face to face accredited LivingWorks training – ASIST, SafeTALK & SuicideTALK. We can however, signpost you to their website for an online one hour training course, LivingWorks Start teaches trainees to recognise when someone is thinking about suicide and connect them to help and support.

Our Face to Face delivery of ASIST is currently on hold until January 2021, we can accept enquiries for bookings as soon as we are able to resume delivery.

Zero Suicide Alliance is also offering free short courses in learning to talk to people about suicide and mental health. You can take part on their website.

(Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)

Please note: that this is a 2 day training course.


ASIST teaches verbal First Aid skills to anyone who may come into contact with a person having thoughts of suicide. It gives an introduction to the most widely used Suicide Intervention Model in the world, a model which is applicable in all situations requiring help.

After taking ASIST, you will be better able to:

  • Be suicide alert - identify people who have thoughts of suicide
  • Understand the reasons behind thoughts of suicide and the reasons for living
  • Recognise invitations for help
  • Recognise potential barriers of seeking help
  • Assess risk and safety - develop a plan to increase the safety of the person at risk of suicide
  • Offer support – recognise other important aspects of suicide prevention including life-promotion and self-care
  • Effectively apply a suicide intervention model
  • Link people with community resources

Cost: £25

This training, usually £300 per delegate has been fully funded by Public Health England & Cornwall Council for anyone who lives or works in Cornwall.

The only cost to the delegate is the £25 cost of the workbook.

Please be aware that there is a fee of £25 for cancellation within 7 days of the start of the course and £50 for anyone who fails to attend or gives less than 24 hours notice

safeTALK

safeTALK-trained helpers are an important part of suicide-safer communities, working alongside intervention resources to identify and avert suicide risks.

Over the course of their training, safeTALK participants will learn to:

  • Notice and respond to situations where suicide thoughts might be present
  • Recognise that invitations for help are often overlooked
  • Move beyond the common tendency to miss, dismiss, and avoid suicide
  • Apply the TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe
  • Know community resources and how to connect someone with thoughts of suicide to them for further help.

The suicideTALK presentation invites everyone—regardless of prior training or experience—to become more aware of suicide prevention opportunities in their community.


Dealing openly with the stigma around suicide, this exploration focuses upon the question "Should we talk about suicide?" By looking at this question in a number of different ways, participants can discover some of the beliefs and ideas about suicide in their communities—and in themselves.
